What Government Does to the Least of Us….

It might surprise you to learn the source of the fifth leading cause of maternal deaths. Abortion. Legal Abortion. It is also the leading cause of pre-born babies’ deaths. This is the industry that our President just called upon God to bless at a recent speech at a Planned Parenthood luncheon.

Kermit Gosnell is an abortionist, currently on trial and awaiting the jury’s verdict. He is accused of killing babies born alive through botched abortions, among other gruesome crimes. Workers at his clinic testified about babies moaning, breathing, and moving until Gosnell severed their spinal cord with scissors. This should revolt you. Yet, it happens thousands upon thousands of times each year inside the wombs of mothers who choose abortion. The gruesome revolting nature of Gosnell’s crime is no different than what happens in many late term abortions. The only difference is location of the baby at the time it is beheaded. Is the objection to abortion a religious one…or is it a moral one? Do we really want America to sanction this? Can we really say this is in the best interest of women? Really?

Planned Parenthood contends that it cannot be compared to Gosnell’s clinic because it performs legal, safe abortions in well-regulated facilities. Eric Ferrero, Vice President of communications for the organization said:  “We have consistently said that this is a horrifying and outrageous case, that Gosnell ran a criminal enterprise, not a health care facility, and that he should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

Well-regulated? Really?

That is not what the folks investigating alleged abuses at the Delaware Planned Parenthood facility seem to be saying. In that facility, filthy conditions, reused unwashed surgical equipment, and bloody drainage on the abortion tables are reputed to have been the norm. The obvious risks of hepatitis or AIDS are only two serious consequences of this sort of filth and degradation of standards. This was not a private criminal’s clinic…this was a Planned Parenthood clinic, which one would presume had careful oversight, and should have been, in Eric Ferrero’s words, “Well-regulated.”

Or, how about the indictment at the Ohio Planned Parenthood abortuary in 2012 regarding a teen who informed the staff she was pregnant through the incest and rape by her father, yet the staff chose not to inform police, not to intervene, and the teen was returned to the same abusive situation? A year and a half later, a basketball coach intervened on Denise’s behalf, notifying police, and the father was finally apprehended and imprisoned.

Abortion results in 2.3 increased risk of cervical cancer,  2-3% result in perforated uteruses, cervical damage in at least 1 %,  increased risk by 7-15 fold of placenta previa in later pregnancies (with serious risk of death), 5-20% risk of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, 10% patients suffer immediate consequences of the risk of any elective surgery such as embolisms, infections, convulsions, and hemorrhaging, not to mention the underreported but often severe mental anguish and depression in later years for the mother who chose to abort her child.

America was founded on the proposition that all people are created equal with certain unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. One of my favorite books by Dr. Seuss reminds us that, “A person’s a person, no matter how small.” (Horton Hears a Who) Is that small person in the video really not to be afforded the rights that we cling to, the rights that made America the greatest, most compassionate nation on Earth? Do we really wish to be redefined as the nation where abortion rates are among the top five in the world?

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) oversees the “Affordable Care Act” which mandates that federal funds can be used to provide abortion coverage. The HHS webpage defines its function as follows:

“THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES (HHS) is the United States government’s principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.” (italics mine)

unborn babyA noble statement. What government does to the least of us, it will do to all of us.

“It is one of the evils, perhaps not the smallest, of democratical governments that the People must feel before they will see or act.” ~ George Washington
